Harmony Hammond’s Bandaged Quilt paintings (2018–present) continue her exploration of “material engagement.” Building on her previous series of Bandaged Grids and Chenilles, these paintings incorporate a multi-layered, built-up surface of overlapping strips of burlap and canvas, applied from the edges of the work to mimic a pieced quilt pattern. Showing ruptures and seams, these fabric strips appear to emerge from and disappear into the canvas. Suggestive of bandages, they are repeatedly overlaid in a geometric composition whose materiality belies the post-minimal concerns around which Hammond orients her practice.
