Donald Moffett's paintings synthesize formal innovation and political consciousness. Emerging from his formative experiences in AIDS activism, these works have a distinctive material language that continues to evolve. Moffett’s methodological approach deliberately destabilizes painting's conventional boundaries through varied interventions, including projecting video onto canvas, shaping works into organic forms, perforating surfaces with holes, using epoxy resin and extruded oil paint, etc. These techniques, developed over decades of studio experimentation, create charged surfaces that reflect Moffett's deep engagement with painting's capacity to embody both resistance and transformation. His paintings demonstrate how technical precision can serve conceptual urgency, maintaining the medium's relevance while pushing it beyond its conventional limitations.
