Artist Donald Moffett left San Antonio for New York when he was young, but he still considers himself a Texan.
So he is delighted to be one of the latest recipients of the Texas Medal of Arts, presented biennially by the Texas Cultural Trust.
“It means the world to me,” said Moffett, 70.
“I’m a Texan through and through, much to the irritation of my many friends in New York."
“It was a complete surprise and a complete thrill.”
In addition to Moffett, the 2025 honorees are Houston natives filmmaker Richard Linklater and actor Dennis Quaid; multimedia artist and musician Terry Allen, a Lubbock native; arts patron Mercedes Bass, who is from Fort Worth; musician Gary Clark Jr. and writer Elizabeth Crook, who are from Austin; musical theater performer Sandy Duncan, who is from New London; the Moody Foundation in Galveston; and the Texas Music Educators Association.
