Art21 now has two additional digital storytelling products: Extended Play and New York CloseupExtended Play is a series that follows artists in their careers. “Sending Out A Signal” is an excellent example of this. You witness Kara Walker discussing a recent project, learning how she deals with history, Black history. Walker talks with her collaborator, musician Jason Moran about their installation of a working calliope—“Katastwóf Karavan”—for Prospect 4, the 2017/2018 triennial in New Orleans.

New York Closeup focuses on artists in the first decade of their professional careers, discussing their work and lives in New York City. This series provides an entirely new slant on being an artist. In a 2015 video, Ruby Sky Stiler and Daniel Gordon talk about the “no-frills feedback” in their lives and, more generally, work-life balance after getting married and having a baby. In a more recent 2017 video, Jamian Juliano-Villani goes on a research trip to the Strand Bookstore and Times Square. She reveals that her source material feels more original when she mines it from a book rather than the convenience of the Internet. Yes, artists are people too.
