Here comes the work of an artist I have long liked and wanted to become close to. It is none other than Betty Parsons (1900-1982) of the Alexander Gray Gallery. She had so many talents. She was a great art dealer, ran a gallery and presented great exhibitions, was an art collector, sculptor, and painter. In 1946, she opened the Betty Parsons Gallery in Manhattan and held exhibitions of Barnett Newman, Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, and Clyfford Still, who were representative American abstract painters of the time, and introduced many female artists such as Agnes Martin, Anne Ryan, and Sonia Sekula. People called Betty Parsons, who ran the gallery for 36 years, the 'mother of abstract expressionism.' Betty Parsons also devoted a long time to creating her own works. In the summer, when she visited her beach studio in Long Island every weekend to work, she closed the gallery. As a gallerist, she introduced many abstract painters, but did not actively promote her own art. In 1977, on the TV show <About the Arts>, the host asked, “Has Betty Parsons, the dealer, ever introduced Betty Parsons, the artist?” Betty Parsons, now 77, replied that she had never done so. Betty Parsons passed away in 1982. Now, 40 years later, the names of the artists she introduced are already known all over the world.
