Teresa Burga's one-person exhibition La Equilibrista will travel to Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Castilla y León, Spain in collaboration with the Weserburg Museum für moderne Kunst, in Bremen, Germany.
The institution's press release follows:
The tightrope walker is the first solo exhibition in Spain by Peruvian conceptual artist Teresa Burga (Iquitos 1935-Lima 2021), considered one of the pioneers in the development of pop and conceptual art in Latin America. This project, carried out in co-production with the Weserburg Museum für Moderne Kunst in Bremen (Germany), includes a selection of works that range from sculptural and prism-shaped objects made in the 1960s, to a wide selection of works on paper in the that highlight a series of drawings made between 2020 and 2021, before his death; as well as the specific production for the MUSAC rooms of a large-format mural painting conceived in the 1960s.
Rooted in her context and culture, Teresa Burga develops a work in which she integrates modernity and tradition in the formal aspect, and in which the uses and customs of her closest reality underlie, as well as a strong social commitment and a criticism of the colonial heritage of Peru, the political and social reality of the country or the situation of women. It is not in vain that her works have been read in terms of a sociological and political map and as a defender of women's rights and feminist postulates.
Burga is part of a group of women artists who, despite being pioneers in their field, did not enjoy due recognition in their time, and it is not until the mid-2000s that she is studied and recovered by modern historiography. In the last years of her career, Teresa Burga has received critical acclaim, with numerous international projects, including her presence at international events such as the XII Istanbul Biennial (2011) and the 56th Venice Biennale ( 2015), or the solo exhibitions held at the Instituto Cultural Peruano Norteamericano (ICPNA) in Lima (2010), the Württembergischer Kunstverein in Stuttgart (2011), the Kunstmuseum Trondheim (2013) or the Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires – Fundación Costantini ( MALBA) (2015).
