Alexander Gray Associates, Germantown
224 Main Street, Garden Level, Germantown NY 12526
Hours: Saturday – Sunday, 12:00 – 6:00 PMAlexander Gray Associates, Germantown is located in the Hudson Valley village of Germantown, New York. Opened in May 2019, the Gallery's Germantown location presents a year-round exhibition program showcasing Gallery artists and special projects. Discretely located on the garden level of a former mechanic’s garage built in the 1920s, the space is domestically scaled, fostering an intimate experience with artworks. Entered through a garden shaded by one of the Village’s oldest maple trees, the building’s original features frame clean white walls, a remarkable cast-iron barrel-coved ceiling, patinated concrete floors, and original windows.
Germantown, one of the seven original towns of Columbia County established in 1788, is in Southwest Columbia County, mid-way between Bard College and Hudson, New York. It is home to approximately 2,000 residents. The region is rooted in agricultural traditions and rich cultural histories, sitting on the ancestral lands of the Mahican Nation. Today, Germantown draws visitors to its small but vibrant Main Street, with unique shops and celebrated dining spots.
Germantown’s views of the Hudson River and the Catskill Mountains have provided artistic inspiration for generations, notably 19th century Hudson River School painters such as Frederick Church and Thomas Cole. Today, Germantown and its neighboring communities—Red Hook, Tivoli, Clermont, Livingston, Catskill and Hudson—are home to a growing number of artists and creatives, including artists represented by the Gallery. Germantown sits near many of the Hudson Valley’s art destinations, which includes a wide range of organizations such as: Storm King (New Windsor), Dia Center for the Arts (Beacon), Magazzino Italian Art (Cold Spring), Hessel Museum at Bard College (Red Hook), Olana (Hudson), and Art Omi (Ghent). In addition to Hudson Valley-based galleries, the region has become home to internationally recognized galleries, including outposts of Mendes Wood DM (Germantown); The Campus (Hudson), a collaborative exhibition space by Bortolami, James Cohan, kaufman repetto, Anton Kern, Andrew Kreps, and kurimanzutto; and The School: Jack Shainman Gallery (Kinderhook). The region’s cultural destinations are celebrated each July with the increasingly popular Upstate Art Weekend, which welcomes thousands of visitors to the Hudson Valley’s dynamic and burgeoning visual art community.
