Overview
Donald Moffett's solo exhibition, DONALD MOFFETT + NATURE CULT + THE McNAY at the McNay Art Museum, San Antonio, Texas.
The institution's press release follows:
San Antonio native Donald Moffett returns to his birthplace in this homecoming exhibition DONALD MOFFETT + NATURE CULT + THE McNAY. In his youth, Donald Moffett’s encounter with the McNay Art Museum’s Georges Seurat drawing, Silhouette de Femme, profoundly influenced his decision to become an artist. After graduating from Trinity University with degrees in art and biology, Moffett found success in the New York art world. Working closely with the McNay, Moffett conceived a presentation of his paintings interwoven with artworks from across the Museum’s modern and contemporary collection along with art, artifacts, and everyday objects from the artist’s home.
The title NATURE CULT broadly refers to Moffett’s monochromatic paintings based on the natural environment and its precariousness. In this exhibition, these abstractions, or “emblems” as the artist refers to them, are comingled with other artists’ depictions of earth, weather, animals, plants, and the cosmos. Together the artworks and artifacts speak to Moffett’s ongoing concerns about ecology and the changing climate. The inclusion of other artists’ work offers multiple perspectives of the past and present, with oblique references to what the future may hold. This distinctive presentation—employing atypical layouts and installation techniques—hints at both the beauty and chaos of human relationships to nature and the artist’s attendant hope of safeguarding a future.
