Betty ParsonsUntitled, c.1967Acrylic on canvas24h x 45.50w in (60.96h x 115.57w cm)BP297$65,000In Untitled (c. 1967), Parsons marries the increased linearity that she introduced into her paintings in the second half of the 1960s with the fields of color that she had been working with for a decade. Parsons often used paint that was highly thinned, which facilitated the incorporation of exposed areas of the canvas into the composition. The complementary color combination of orange and blue produces a lively contrast that is echoed in the highly textural quality of the paint. Parsons’ approach to color was notable, and critic Lawrence Alloway observed, “She has a color sense that has been, at different times, equally at home with the vivacious and the grave, with carnival gaiety and nocturnal melancholy, with heraldic pattern and Dorset mists.”
