Designed by architect and artist Tony Smith and overlooking the Long Island Sound, it fast became the artist’s regular weekend retreat and the site of concentrated art-making. Winter Southold (1966) comes from a period in the second half of the 1960s when Parsons incorporated increased linearity into her paintings. Interlocking bands of white and brown suggest bare trees in a snowy landscape, punctuated by areas of green and black. As Parsons embraced a reduced palette and simplified composition in this painting, nature remained very much her source of inspiration.
