Art Unlimited, Art 43 Basel
Messe Basel, Hall 1, U18
Basel, Switzerland
The Gallery's presentation at Art Basel Art Unlimited 2012 focused on a single environmental installation by Melvin Edwards from the artist's solo exhibition in 1970 at the Whitney Museum of American Art. The work, Pyramid Up and Down Pyramid (1969/1970), recreated on-site by the artist, occupying 12 meters of running wall space, bisected by a perpendicular wall.
Pyramid Up and Down Pyramid was first presented in 1969 at the Studio Museum in Harlem, in a group show, "X to the 4th Power." In 1970, the work was presented in Edwards' solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art, alongside three other works in barbed wire and chain. The presentation at Art Unlimited is the first time the work has been exhibited since 1993.
In addition to Art Unlimited, Alexander Gray Associates presented Melvin Edwards in the Art Feature Sector of Art Basel.
