About this Series / Project

Luis Camnitzer created the "The Assignment Books" series in 2011 as an ongoing project. The series consists of twelve artworks, each pairing two items: an engraved brass plaque and an accompanying object that stands as a physical representation of the engraved text. The title of each work speaks to the words engraved onto the plate, and function as assignments for the audience to complete as part of the experience of viewing and interpreting the artwork, for example, This is a poetic statement. Identify the elements that construct the poem. Viewers are encouraged to write down their interpretation of the title’s meaning and hang the new given title next to the object on display. With this project, Camnitzer intends to bridge the distance between artist and spectator by encouraging an active involvement to complete the work.
