March 11 – July 4, 2010
Luis Camnitzer retrospective exhibition at Daros-Latinamerica, Zurich.
The Daros-Latinamerica Collection enjoys the world’s largest institutional collection of Camnitzer's work, and it is from that source that this comprehensive exhibition has been assembled. Viewers are treated to a pyrotechnical display of intellect: an unusually coherent and principled corpus that is at the same time possessed of a rakish charm and poetic maturity.

Alexander Gray Associates Relocation and Expansion
February
7,
2010
Alexander Gray Associates is delighted to announce the gallery’s relocation and expansion.
The new exhibition space is located on the second floor of the West Chelsea Arts Building at 508-526 West 26 Street. The gallery will be larger and more accessible to audiences that have come to appreciate the gallery’s distinctive programming.
With a large bank of windows overlooking 26th Street and the next phase of the High Line park, Alexander Gray Associates will have a stronger street presence in Chelsea. The Gallery looks forward to closer proximity to our colleagues in the West Chelsea Art Building, including second floor galleries Nicole Klagsbrun, Andrea Meislin, BravinLee Programs and Marcello Marvelli; and access to Greene Naftali’s direct 8th floor elevator.
The new gallery space will open on Friday, February 19, 2010, with What’s Left: Artworks Made by a Public, a group exhibition exploring public participation and ephemera in artworks from the 1960s to present.

Miscegenated Family Album
Looking for the Face I Had Before the World Was Made
Museum of Contemporary Art Denver
January 29 – May 15, 2010
In Alexander Gray Associates artist Lorraine O’Grady’s own words, Miscegenated Family Album (1994) is a “novel in space.” Installed as a series of 16 photo-based diptychs, the work began as a memorial to her older sister Devonia, who died unexpectedly at the age of 37, while the two were estranged. The photographs of Devonia and her family are contrasted with images of Queen Nefertiti, the ancient Egyptian queen—enabling the viewer to draw parallels between Devonia and Queen Nefertiti, a woman who had disappeared from Egyptian history when she was 36. O’Grady’s work extends beyond personal reflection on this tragedy by taking on the universal challenges of memory, loss, and the erratic shifts in how history is preserved.
Lorraine O’Grady’s exhibition is one of six exhibitions at MCA Denver focused on the metaphysics of the human figure grouped under the title Looking for the Face I Had Before the World Was Made. The artists include: Michaël Borremans, Samuel Beckett, Eric & Heather ChanSchatz, Lorraine O’Grady, A. G. Rizzoli and William Stockman. Each of the artists explores how depicting the human figure can offer something more consequential than a simple catalogue of physical features. Each work in the exhibition tells a human story while de-emphasizing the likeness of any particular person. Using a wide variety of styles, the artists are joined by an interest in creating a sense of a phenomenon deeper than the surface image, capturing a presence prior to the appearance of the fully formed individual. The line “Looking for the face I had before the world was made,” is a quote from the late poet and dramatist, William Butler Yeats, from his poem “A Woman Young and Old.” It can be understood as either a statement of faith or a philosophical riddle related to the formation of the self.

Introductions: Alexander Gray Associates Launches New Program
June
27,
2007
Alexander Gray Associates is pleased to announce its new program, Introductions. The program, opening on June 27, 2007 draws on the vision and influence of our mid-career gallery artists who then select emerging artists for an exhibition, exposing our audiences to new artists. In this way, we hope to reinforce the direct impact of our associated artists on intergenerational dialogues and artistic exchanges.
The first in the Introductions series is David Cabrera selects Dawit L. Petros, and Bruce Yonemoto selects Bryan Jackson. The kickoff opening reception is scheduled for June 27, 2007, with a closing reception slated for September 8, 2007 (the gallery is closed for the month of August).

J. Morgan Puett exhibition, Wholesale to the Trade Only, 1985–1997 at Alexander Gray Associates appears in The New Yorker.
J. Morgan Puett
Art and commerce have always been uneasy bedfellows, except for artists like Puett, who embrace both simultaneously. From 1985 to 1997, Puett ran a workshop in SoHo, designing clothing for the downtown crowd, and hosted everything from exhibitions and concerts to poetry and tarot-card readings. This revisiting features a large installation of effects left over after the business closed–cancelled checks, payroll records, clothing on racks (including a prototype for Suzanne Vega's wedding gown)–all dipped in preservative beeswax. Like a time capsule, Puett's artifacts present SoHo in the moments before it succumbed to boutique mania. It's also, inarguably, the best-smelling show in town.
