Introductions: Alexander Gray Associates Launches New Program
June 27, 2007

Alexander Gray Associates is pleased to announce its new program, Introductions. The program, opening on June 27, 2007 draws on the vision and influence of our mid-career gallery artists who then select emerging artists for an exhibition, exposing our audiences to new artists. In this way, we hope to reinforce the direct impact of our associated artists on intergenerational dialogues and artistic exchanges.

The first in the Introductions series is David Cabrera selects Dawit L. Petros, and Bruce Yonemoto selects Bryan Jackson. The kickoff opening reception is scheduled for June 27, 2007, with a closing reception slated for September 8, 2007 (the gallery is closed for the month of August).

The New Yorker: J. Morgan Puett
December 18, 2006

J. Morgan Puett exhibition, Wholesale to the Trade Only, 1985–1997 at Alexander Gray Associates appears in The New Yorker.

J. Morgan Puett

Art and commerce have always been uneasy bedfellows, except for artists like Puett, who embrace both simultaneously. From 1985 to 1997, Puett ran a workshop in SoHo, designing clothing for the downtown crowd, and hosted everything from exhibitions and concerts to poetry and tarot-card readings. This revisiting features a large installation of effects left over after the business closed–cancelled checks, payroll records, clothing on racks (including a prototype for Suzanne Vega's wedding gown)–all dipped in preservative beeswax. Like a time capsule, Puett's artifacts present SoHo in the moments before it succumbed to boutique mania. It's also, inarguably, the best-smelling show in town.
